The sovereign territory of Malaysia occupies a strategic position within Southeast Asia, bifurcated by the South China Sea into two distinct landmasses. These regions comprise Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, the latter situated on the northern portion of the island of Borneo.

Land borders are shared with Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei, while maritime boundaries extend toward Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Kuala Lumpur serves as the legislative center, while Putrajaya functions as the administrative seat of the federal government.

Established on September 16, 1963, the federation originally integrated the Federation of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore. Following the departure of Singapore in 1965, the state solidified its identity as a multi-ethnic federal constitutional monarchy under the Westminster parliamentary system.

Governance includes a distinctive rotational monarchy where nine hereditary Malay rulers elect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong every five years. This system provides a symbolic continuity for the nation’s Bumiputera population while navigating the complexities of a diverse, multi-cultural demographic landscape.

Economically, the state has evolved from a primary producer of rubber and tin into a major exporter of electronics and petroleum products. As a prominent member of ASEAN, it plays a central role in regional diplomacy and maintains critical territorial interests in the South China Sea involving China.

A dual-track legal framework combines English Common Law with Syariah courts for Muslim citizens. This structure supports a society where Islam remains the state religion, though the constitution provides for the religious freedom of diverse minority populations.
