The inception of ByteDance occurred on March 13, 2012, when software engineer Zhang Yiming and his colleague Liang Rubo established the firm in a residential apartment in the Zhongguancun district of Beijing. This venture followed their previous collaboration on 99fang.com, a real estate search engine founded in 2009. The founders aimed to utilize large-scale data classification to organize digital information, moving away from traditional search methods toward a model of personalized content delivery.

In March 2012, the company released its first application, Neihan Duanzi, a platform for sharing humorous media that reached a user base of 200 million before its closure in 2018. By August 2012, the organization launched Toutiao, a news and content service that became its primary product in China. Early growth was supported by venture capital, including a Series A round in 2012 led by SIG Asia Investments, followed by a US$10 million Series B round in 2013 from DST Global and Matrix Partners.

Expansion into international markets became a formal objective in January 2013, as executives outlined a strategy to develop English-language versions of their existing platforms. To bolster its technical capabilities, the firm established the ByteDance AI Lab in March 2016 under the leadership of Wei-Ying Ma, formerly of Microsoft Research Asia. This period marked a transition from domestic success to a global-first growth strategy, characterized by the acquisition of the Indonesian platform BABE in December 2016.

A significant shift in the global digital landscape occurred in November 2017 when the company acquired the short-form video service musical.ly for approximately US$1 billion. This acquisition facilitated the merger of musical.ly with the existing TikTok platform on August 2, 2018, providing the company with an established user base in the United States and Europe. During this phase, the firm also acquired News Republic from Cheetah Mobile and the video app Flipagram, which was later rebranded as Vigo Video.

Domestic competition remained intense, leading to protracted legal disputes with Tencent beginning in 2018. These litigations involved allegations of unfair competition and unauthorized data usage on platforms such as WeChat and QQ. By early 2024, many of these legal challenges remained unresolved due to jurisdictional complexities, even as the organization solidified its position as a major competitor to established internet firms like Alibaba and Meta.
